We advise you to notify the trader straightaway in writing if
necessary and give them an opportunity to correct the problem.

If the matter cannot be resolved we will provide assistance and
try to mediate to resolve any disputes.
- Try to obtain three written quotations covering the work, the
price, payment arrangements and start/finish dates
- Before you make any final payment make sure you are satisfied
the work has been carried out properly and meets the terms of the
contract.
- Sometimes unexpected extra work will be needed, but agree the
additional costs in writing before extra work starts.
Get an invoice, including VAT (if applicable), and ask for a
signed receipt for every payment you make - keep all invoices and
receipts.
Additional help and support with home improvement, repair or
adaptation work is available from local Home Improvement Agencies
(HIA) to those people who meet certain eligibility criteria. The
HIAs can help supervise work and assist with accessing grants. For
