Fraud and corruption within the public sector costs the taxpayer
hundreds of millions of pounds each year with detected cases on the
Cheshire West and Chester Council is committed to fighting fraud and corruption and actively encourages reporting by anyone who suspects fraud or who has any concerns about any aspect of the Council's work.
Where to find help
If you suspect that someone is committing some kind of fraud against the Council then you need to refer your suspicions. The Council also operates a Whistleblowing Policy.

All referrals are treated in the strictest confidence. Reports of other types of fraud such as scams/online fraud/identity fraud/phishing can be reported directly to Action Fraud.
If you suspect someone of claiming benefit you think they
may not be entitled to (including Housing Benefit) you can report
this through the benefit fraud pages on this website.
What form might this fraud take
Fraud within Local Authorities can take many forms for example:
- Council Tax Local Scheme (the replacement for Council tax benefit)
- Other Council Tax irregularities, falsely claimed exemptions/discounts
- Blue Badge misuse
- Staff/internal fraud
- Contractors/supplier fraud/irregularities
Who might commit these types of fraud
Fraud can be committed by a number of perpetrators. These might include:
- Council employees
- Agency workers
- A Councillor
- A member of the public
- A Contractor or company
