Voting in the 1 May elections

Residents set to elect Shadow Council

04/11/2008

Voters in the boroughs of Ellesmere Port and Neston, Chester and Vale Royal have now received their polling cards for the elections for the new Council - Cheshire West and Chester.

The voting on 1 May will give residents the opportunity to vote for up to three candidates to form the Shadow Council. It will be the councillors elected at this local election that will begin to shape the policies that will be introduced with the new Council.

There are 87 polling stations across the new authority area, and your polling card identifies which polling station is closest to you. The opening times are also listed on your card.

Voters will be asked to select up to three candidates, but can choose only to vote for one or two if they wish. They should not, however, vote for more than three as this will cause their ballot paper to be rejected.

Ballot papers should be completed by putting a cross against the name of the candidate or candidates you wish to vote for. Clear instructions as to how to vote will be displayed in the voting station and on the ballot paper, but anyone who is uncertain should ask the presiding officer at the polling station who will be happy to assist.

A website to support the campaign encouraging people to vote has been developed - www.useyour3votes.org.uk - and gives road show dates along with information about electoral offices and maps showing the electoral wards.

The new Council will begin its life on 1 April 2009 with a set of governing principles that will place the Council closer to the people and communities it will serve.
