Frequently Asked Questions

Questions and Answers

Digit Al with Scart lead

Why is Television going digital?

Switching off the old analogue signal allows digital TV to be rolled out in placves that currently cannot receive it, giving everybody more choice and new services.

When is this likely to happen?

In the Cheshire West and Chester area, this is likely to happen between September and December 2009. DigitalUK will be contacting every household before switchover.

Do I need a new aerial?

A minority of homes will need a new aerial. As a rule of thumb, if you get a good analogue signal now, you should get a good digital signal. See our 'How To Switch' page for more information.

I share my aerial with others, what do I need to do?

If you share your aerial you need to talk to your landlord or managing agent. They can get further information by downloading the Property Manager's Guide (External website) from Digital UK

Do I need a digital box for every TV in my home?

Every TV that receives a signal from your aerial will need to be either replaced with a digital TV or have a digital set top box if you wish to continue to watch TV broadcasts. TVs used solely for playback of videos or for games consoles will not need to be converted.

What about my video recorder?

VHS recorders will still be able to play back recordings as before, and will be able to record one digital channel at a time. However, they will be unable to record one digital channel while you watch another.

To record one channel as you watch another, you will need a Digital TV recorder such as Freeview Playback, Sky + or Virgin Media V+.

Ricability's website (External link) gives guidance on Set Top Boxes and Digital TV recorders.

What happens if I do nothing?

Unless you have a digital service or digital TV already, you won't be able to continue to watch TV broadcasts after switchover. Remember, this applies to all TVs in your home.
