The Weaver Hall Museum
All Change!
Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse is the new name for the Salt Museum in London Road, Northwich. This will allow the Lion Salt Works in nearby Marston to develop as the main salt-related visitor attraction for the area. Weaver Hall Museum will uncover many of the other stories relating to the fascinating history of Cheshire as well as exploring the workhouse history of this imposing Victorian building.
Until May 2010, the museum was known as the Salt Museum. There has been a museum on this site since 1981. Previously the museum was located in Northwich Library in the town centre. The first Salt Museum opened its doors in 1885.
The museum is now housed within the old Northwich Union Workhouse building and has displays about the building's history as a home for Victorian Paupers.

Access Issues
The museum is fully accessible with designated disabled parking bays, accessible toilets and a lift to the first floor level.
Shop and Coffee Shop
The museum has a well stocked shop with local books, postcards, DVDs and attractive souvenirs. We have a coffee shop with a selection of hot and cold drinks and locally produced cakes. There is a pub next door for those wanting hot food.
How to Get Here
The museum is situated on the A533 about half a mile south of Northwich town centre. It is well sign posted (follow the brown signs) from the A556 and is approximately a 30 minute drive from Chester and 40 minutes from Liverpool and Manchester. If you are approaching from the town centre, make sure you indicate and turn right immediately after passing underneath the railway viaduct. We have a large free car park which can easily accommodate coach parties.
Research
Students and local history researchers are welcome to make use of a wide range of resource material by appointment. The museum library contains books and articles on the local history of the area, the Salt industry in Cheshire and elsewhere in the UK.
