Our mission
'Protecting, investigating and helping people to appreciate the
archaeology of Chester and its District'
What we do
Founded in 1972, Chester Archaeology is one of the
longest-established archaeological units in the country and
provides a comprehensive range of services aimed at many different
types of people.
These services include:
- Drawing up policies for the preservation and investigation of
archaeological remains
- Giving advice on the archaeological impact of proposed
developments
- Interpreting sites and monuments
- Excavating and recording sites and buildings
- Analysing archaeological finds
- Maintaining the definitive archive of archaeological
discoveries in Chester
- Publishing technical and popular books and leaflets about our
discoveries
- Promoting public understanding and enjoyment of archaeology
through short courses, lectures, displays, children's activities
and opportunities for volunteer work and work experience
placements
- Joint projects in partnership with other sections of the City

If you want to meet a member of staff, please arrange this in
advance; we are available from Monday to Friday, 9.00 am - 4.30 pm.
Our offices adjoin the Grosvenor Museum. Its galleries and shop are
open 10.30 am - 5.00 pm Monday to Saturday, 2.00 pm - 5.00 pm
Sundays. (Closed 24-26 December, 1 January and Good
Friday). All staff can now also be reached by direct dial
telephone numbers and Internet e-mail as well as by post and
fax.
