Archaeology and the Local Plan
The protection of archaeological remains is firmly
established in Chester's Local Plan. We are used to working closely
with architects and others to mitigate the most damaging effects of
new development. Large-scale excavation is only undertaken
when there is no alternative.
If you are considering new development in Chester District, you
should consult with Development Control staff and the
City Archaeologist as soon as possible, before submitting a
planning application.
We will consider the nature of the development and the
importance of any archaeological remains threatened. In many
cases we ask for an archaeological evaluation of the site. We
may then wish to discuss with you how the design can be modified to
reduce the damage to the remains and ask you to make provision for
further excavation or recording. The Council can refuse planning
permission to ensure the preservation of archaeological remains,
but this is a last resort.
