Online Directories

Cheshire Trade Directories

A range of Cheshire trade directories are now available online.

You can:

  • Search for a name, place or trade
  • Browse the directories page by page

Most directories will provide:

  • a brief general history of the area;
  • population statistics;
  • details of parliamentary representation;
  • arrangements for local government;
  • facts about churches, chapels and local institutions;
  • a listing of significant residents and local tradesmen,
  • information about local transport and communications

Although not necessarily providing details of every resident or every occupation found in a particular township or parish, trade directories are a valuable source of information about named individuals who were living in a particular place at a particular time and the local trades and businesses that could be found there.

Trade directories were produced from the seventeenth century onwards to meet an increased demand for information on commerce and industry. As demand for them increased, they became more specialised and were published on a town or county basis.
