Heritage Skills Traineeship

Stone masonry

Chester Renaissance has secured funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create fixed term opportunities in heritage skills. These opportunities are available as Heritage Skills Traineeships with Cheshire West and Chester Council.

A Traineeship is a work-based learning programme designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to develop your prospects and career in the industry. By starting a Heritage Skills Traineeship you begin the first step to a challenging and rewarding career. To be successful you will need good communication and numeracy skills and a logical approach to problem solving - and you should be able to recognise the importance of attention to detail and finish. Being committed and dedicated to both work and your Traineeship is essential.

How to apply?

The skills coordinator, Paul Valentine, will send an application form out to you on request. You need to contact Paul with your contact details. Your training will be tailored around your individual needs.

How long will it take?

The Traineeship is for a 12 months fixed period, which should allow you to complete your NVQ. You will attend day release at West Cheshire College for a specialist course.

Completing your Traineeship

Your Heirtage Skills Traineeship is made up from:

  • NVQ
  • Selected skills-based courses.

Your NVQ portfolio is like a work diary, it records your activities and experiences. Your portfolio is assessed to make sure you are competent. Your work will be assessed at your work place.

Further progression

Qualifying as a stone mason will open many doors to you. You will be able to show your employer that, along with being qualified, you have also shown commitment, dedication and professionalism. This could lead to promotion, higher rates of pay and managerial opportunities. Many trainees decide to progress their education through professional qualifications like BTec, HNCs and even degrees. Alternatively you could decide to set up your own business or take the step to work abroad.
