St Johns the Baptist Church Project

Scope of the St Johns the Baptist Church work

  • Tree pruning and felling around the St Johns Church and Bowling green.
  • Applying for and submission of Scheduled Monument Consent. Project liaison with English Heritage as the landscaping works are included in the context of the monument.
  • Footpath and landscaping works along vicars lane to improve pedestrian access from the amphitheatre through St Johns and Grosvenor park.
  • Devegetation of the Chapter House and St Johns ruins. Following removal of vegetation from the ruins carry out a structural inspection to identify and schedule any masonry repairs required.
  • Repairs to the chapter house door and improvements to security; schedule and specify repairs, allowing for the involvement of a Conservation Accredited Architect.
  • Inspect and schedule repairs of the metal railing to the perimeter of the St Johns Church and grounds to allow painting (black)
  • Inspect existing architectural lighting fittings and associated switchgear. Arrange for testing to establish whether they can be reused and if possible propose a more vandal resistant fitting and minor design alterations.
  • Inspect the retaining wall between the St Johns Church and the bowling green adjacent to Anchorite Cell, when vegetation has been removed. Prepare a structural report, with recommendations and scope of any investigatory works necessary.

 

Tree maintenance on land surrounding St Johns the Baptist Church

Tree maintenance works recommended by Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Aboricultural Consultant includes: crown cleaning, removal of lower limbs growing towards the corner of the towers and church area to improve views and opening up areas susceptible to anti-social behaviour. Assist in the devegetation and restoration of the ruins of the ancient monument.
