The Amphitheatre

Chester's Roman Amphitheatre is of international importance and forms an integral part of the city’s unique heritage; chronicling over 2000 years of the development of this historic city. Since its discovery in 1929, the Amphitheatre has become recognised as a unique survival of Roman Britain. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Following the commission of improvement works by Chester Renaissance in 2009 to the visual, amenity, interpretation, access and maintenance of the amphitheatre, the project will be completed in 2010. This will make it a more attractive and interesting space for residents and visitors. Through improved interpretation and signage we will be able to tell more of the story of this unique Roman amphitheatre.

The final works of this project will be complemented by an international artist creating a 3D mural on the rear wall of the Amphitheatre, starting July 2010. All are welcome to watch the artist in residence bring the Amphitheatre to life.
