The Cathedral Quarter Phase 1

Chester Cathedral, Chester Renaissance and Cheshire West and Chester Council - are working together on a visionary initiative to find new ways of enhancing the Cathedral Quarter experience, with the aim of opening up its exceptional heritage and cultural potential for residents and visitors alike.

The Cathedral Quarter Phase 1 project has already identified the potential to create a new square in the heart of the city, allowing the Cathedral to be fully appreciated.

The potential for improved staging for events and a new terrace café is also being investigated. The project could significantly enhance the setting of the Cathedral and establish new links with the city through public realm improvements stretching from Town Hall Square down to Eastgate Street.

Improved links to the city walls and the regeneration of the area around the bell tower are being considered. Chester and the Cathedral may also benefit from new architectural lighting to highlight this 'gem' in the heart of the historic core which will add to the offer in the evening economy.

The Chester Cathedral Quarter Project aims to be a leading part of achieving the city's ambition to position Chester as a must-see European destination. The quality of any new work will be of great importance and the project aims to be regarded as an exemplar nationally and beyond. We are therefore truly excited by this opportunity.

Beyond this exciting Phase One project, the Cathedral, working in partnership with Chester Renaissance, Cheshire West and Chester, is concluding work on a Conservation Management Plan for the whole Quarter and is also moving towards an options appraisal for further phased development.
