Richard Riddell

Richard has been blessed to have been the Town Crier of his fair city Washington USA for the last three years. In those three years he has won Best American Crier at the 2008 North American Town Crier Competition in Annapolis, Maryland, as well as a 1st place and two 2nd place finishes and Best Overall Crier at this year’s Bermuda 400th Anniversary Invitational International Town Crier Competition.

At 6 foot 4 inches tall he is an imposing presence. He is formerly a member of the National Shakespeare Company of New York City, as well as having been a professional opera singer in Europe, mostly in Zurich, Switzerland, and the U.S.

His demeanour and performance as Town Crier, therefore, is wholly affected by his having been a professional stage performer for over 20 years. He still performs today, but subject to the demands of family life and that of teaching German and English in the public school.

Richard has two beautifully tailored, faithfully period (18th century) civilian Crier uniforms.
