Eddisbury Dig
The Habitats and Hillforts project have completed an eight week archaeological dig at Eddisbury Hill, Iron Age Hillfort. The dig re-excavated trenches through the ramparts and one of the entrances that were originally opened up between 1936 and 1938 in order to expose the sections and recover charcoal samples for radiocarbon dating.
Thanks to the permission from The Forestry Commission and Mr Platt, the farmer on whose land the archaeologists are working, the dig needed to be extended for a further 4 weeks to investigate additional trenches.
Dan explained some of the early findings from the first phase of the excavation
'This is just one project of many that the Habitats and Hillforts project is undertaking. Over a three year period, Habitats and Hillforts aim to conserve and enhance the string of six important Iron Age hillforts along the sandstone ridge and their associated habitats. The involvement of local people in the project is key to its success and there will be lots of opportunities to get involved'
