Exciting new Educational Resource at Burwardsley Outdoor Education Centre
Cheshire West and Chester Outdoor Education Service in partnership with Habitats and Hillforts has created an exciting new Educational Resource based at the Burwardsley Outdoor Education Centre.
The resource is based around the remains of an Iron Age Round house which has been created on the site.
Schools visit the centre and take over the excavation of the round house. They manage the excavation uncovering the remains of the house along with artefacts such as pottery and iron tools. This allows children to have a very practical experience of the history of this period and allows for a skill based cross curricular approach to the teaching session.
Associated with the excavation children also experience using Iron Age technology to recreate pottery, cordage and the use of an Iron Age loom to weave fabric.
To help put the excavation into context and bring it further to life we have created a replica of an Iron Age Round Hose. This allows children to understand more realistically the living conditions of our Iron Age ancestors.

The house has its own fireplace, quern for grinding corn and a bread oven that allows children to experience every day activities from the Iron Age.
The creation of this exciting new resource really allows children and young people to engage in a very practical way in learning not only about the Iron Age but also how it fitted into the landscape of the Sandstone Ridge and has influenced that landscape today.
Sessions for schools during 2010 and 2011 are subsidised thanks to funding from Habitats and Hillforts. Funding is limited, so to book your place now or for more information contact Martin Kirkman at the Outdoor Centre.
