Archaeology

Final phase of opportunities for volunteers: As part of the Hillforts of the Ridge programme various opportunities are available to enable local people to get involved in archaeological fieldwork and receive basic training in a number of archaeological techniques. This year, as the projects final year, the events will include survey and excavation at a number of locations on and around the six hillforts covered by the project

Topographic surveys at Helsby and Maiden Castle: 1 day training opportunities:

A chance to learn more about the techniques and equipment involved in topographical (humps and bumps) surveying will be provided by two training days for volunteers on Helsby and Maiden Castle (Bickerton) hillforts in the late winter/early spring of 2012. The basic training will be delivered over a single day and will involve both the use of survey equipment and an introduction in to the archaeological interpretation of earthworks. We will only be able to cater for a maximum of 10 people per day so booking is essential.
