Footpaths & Steps
Practical access management - timber steps
Parts of the Sandstone Trail are very steep and quite challenging to walkers and that is what many people enjoy. For others though, the challenge would be too much, and to make the Trail accessible and enjoyable to as many people as possible, BTCV have been involved in a number of major step-building projects along it's length. As well as making the route more accessible, a well built flight of steps can ensure walkers stick to the path, protecting pathside vegetation from erosion and prevent the path surface from deteriorating badly as a result of heavy rainfall. This course gives you the chance to learn about and practice some of the main techniques for building highly functional, durable and visually appealing flights of steps using 'off-the shelf' treated timbers in the countryside.

Practical access management - stone steps & stone pitching
Timber steps are very useful and quick to construct and have been used to great effect along the Sandstone Trail. For a flight of steps to last and last, and that blends naturally into the landscape there is no material to match our local sandstone. The work is slower and heavier, but always worth the effort when the results are so well received by passers by. If you need to learn the skills of stone pitching and stepbuilding for your own work, or if you just want to play a part in creating a solid, functional and attractive contribution to the landscape of the Sandstone Trail that will be appreciated by walkers for years to come then join us for this two day course.
