Practical Pond Creation and Management
The Cheshire Landscape is famous for its high concentration of ponds and the varied wildlife they support. Many have originated as Marl Pits as part of the development of the agricultural landscape over the past 200 years. The wildlife they support, however, is broadly similar to that which existed in much earlier generations, even before humans had much impact on the landscape at all. We now know that the best wildlife ponds are those that replicate the kinds of wetland habitats that used to occur naturally in this area, but no longer can as a result of the heavily managed nature of the landscape we inhabit today. This course will give you a chance to take part in a pond creation project and learn about the principles and techniques involved in creating new ponds for wildlife and managing existing ponds to best effect.
