Coppicing and hurdlemaking
Coppicing is about harvesting small-diameter wood that can be used for many purposes in a sustainable way that also creates suitable habitat conditions for a wide range of woodland species. One of the most profitable ways to make use of coppice materials is to use them to make woven hurdles. This course would be useful for anyone looking for work in the environmental sector and for involving communities in local woodland projects.

Practical dry stone walling
A well built dry stone wall should outlast any of the people involved in building it and leave a legacy of their work in the countryside for years to come. It can also provide shelter and a stable microclimate for birds, small mammals, amphibians and a huge variety of invertebrates. After a few years colonies of lichens decorate the sunny side, with algae and mosses growing in the shade. This wall is in a suberb setting, high on the Sandstone Trail and has been worked on by people attending these courses over the past three years. As our work here nears completion, come and learn some traditional walling skills and make your own contribution to one of the lasting legacies of the Habitats and Hillforts project.
