Air Pollution Banding

Maximum levels of five key air pollutants are considered by the system below:

Banding Index Health Effects
Low 1
2
3
Effects are unlikely to be noticed even by individuals who know they are sensitive to air pollution
Moderate 4
5
6
Mild effects, unlikely to require action, may be noticed amongst sensitive individuals
High 7
8
9
Sensitive people may notice significant effects. They may need to avoid or reduce these effects (e.g. reducing exposure by spending less time in polluted areas outdoors). Asthmatics will find that their 'reliever' inhaler is likely to reverse the effects.
Very High 10 The effects on sensitive individuals described for 'High' levels of pollution may worsen.

For residents of Ellesmere Port this information is available on the electronic display boards in the town. Weekly summaries are published in the Ellesmere Port Standard and Chester Standard.

The table below shows the current readings at each of our real-time monitoring stations. Readings are in micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m3).You can view each site on an interactive map by clicking on its site name in the table.
