The Planning Advisory Service is a shared service covering Cheshire West and Chester, Cheshire East, Warrington and Halton. Information and advice is provided on the archaeological implications of development, archaeological contractors and briefs for investigating sites.

Advice is provided on archaeological policies and legislation and land use change and management. Information on archaeological sites and finds, historic buildings and landscapes is held in the Cheshire Historic Environment Record, including scheduled monuments and other sites of archaeological importance.

Historic Environment Service

The Historic Environment Service is the first point of call for archaeology within Chester city centre. The team has many years experience in managing and interpreting the urban archaeological resource, including the visible monuments, buried remains, and finds and archives. It advises on flagship heritage assets such as the city walls and amphitheatre.

The team is also involved in several Chester Renaissance projects and other strategic initiatives across Cheshire West and Chester which affect the historic environment. In addition it also provides a range of site information and public and community access services, including helping to deliver the University of Chester Archaeology Course.

Courses in Archaeology

Archaeology is now available to degree level as a minor, equal and major subject in the BA Honours (Combined Subjects) programme at the University of Chester.
