Portable Antiquities Scheme – Recording your archaeological finds
The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a national scheme to encourage the reporting of archaeological objects found by members of the public. Every year many thousands of objects are discovered, many of these by metal detector users, but also by people out walking, gardening or going about their daily work. Such discoveries offer an important source for understanding our past and can be reported to the local Finds Liaison Officer.
Finds Liaison Officers record archaeological objects of all types dating to before 1700. The scheme is voluntary and whilst the Finds Liaison Officer may need to borrow your artefacts whilst they are recorded, they will be returned to you.
The Finds Liaison Officer for Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire is Vanessa Oakden and her finds surgeries in this area are at:
- The Grosvenor Museum on the 2nd Friday of every month between 10.30am - 4.00pm.
