Chester city centre vehicle access
Most vehicles are not allowed into the central shopping streets of Chester between 8am and 6pm.
Loading and unloading is allowed before 10.30am and after 4.30pm.
Access into the main pedestrianised area is controlled by a barrier outside the Town Hall in Northgate Street.
The scheme recognises that some vehicles need to gain access during the restricted period.
- one day: £10
- two days: £20
- three days: £50
- four days: £70
- five days: £90
The council grants special permits to essential vehicles needed for emergency repairs. Annual access permits are also issued to owners or residents of properties and businesses that have private parking places off the restricted streets. Annual permits are also issued to security firms who collect and deliver to banks and building societies.
Official cars for weddings and funerals at the Cathedral, churches and chapels in the restricted streets, and guests of the two hotels in the restricted area should all report to the attendant at the barrier.
Disabled badge holders
Blue badge holders are permitted to park in designated bays within the central shopping streets. Please check the signs at each bay for any limited waiting times.
If you need vehicle access to the pedestrianised area during the restricted hours you should report to the attendant at the barrier and must display your blue badge.
Taxis are allowed into Frodsham Street and Foregate Street to get to the taxi rank.
Apart from certain limited exceptions, taxis are not allowed in some of the other central shopping streets between 8am and 6pm.
This applies only to black Hackney carriages and not private hire vehicles, which are restricted in the same way as ordinary cars.
