Motorcyclists
Modern motorcycles offer fantastic performance - but that performance can get you into trouble.
You are up to 30 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured while riding a motorcycle than while driving a car. What can you do to reduce the odds? Learn how to ride safely!
Basic information on motorcycling and how to get your licence is available on the Direct Gov website.
Even if you have a full motorcycle licence, you should consider extra training and possibly taking a more advanced test. This especially applies if you have not ridden a modern bike for some time.
Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cheshire Constabulary run several courses aimed at riders who have passed their tests and are looking to improve their skills.
Lifetime Skills
A full-day assessment for two riders with an off-duty Police
motorcyclist.
All types of machine are catered for, providing that rider and motorcycle are capable of coping with the national speed limit!
Emphasis is on real life needs such as positioning, hazard
perception, cornering and overtaking. All riders will receive a
detailed report summarising their riding skills plus a certificate
of completion.
Please contact the Driver
Improvement Team for price, availability and more
information.
Bike Safe
This is a Police-led course providing riders with the opportunity of improving their skills. Although we are involved in this, please contact Cheshire Police or visit the website Bike Safe for information or to book online.
Other courses
There are several other organisations providing advanced training in Cheshire West and Chester, as well as private training schools. Most, if not all, will qualify you for discounts with insurers.
- The Government's Enhanced Rider Scheme is an assessment and training programme.
- The Institute of Advanced Motorists has a section for motorcyclists and local groups. The South Cheshire Advanced Motorcyclists cover the Cheshire West and Chester area.
- RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, also runs its own advanced rider test which rates riders as Gold, Silver or Bronze.
