COVID-19 will have long term impacts on us all. It has brought new challenges for our health, for society and for the economy. Cheshire West and Chester Council are developing plans to overcome these challenges and build a stronger future for our borough and we want your help.
Our response to the pandemic has been about togetherness – individuals and communities acting together to do the right thing and support each other. We want that to continue through our recovery and a conversation with you about how we shape the future.
- What do you think is most important to focus on to build a stronger future for everyone in the borough?
- How do you think the Council could help make this happen?
- How do you think you and your community could help make this happen?
Please share your ideas with us on the ideas boards below. Alternatively, if you would prefer to share your views privately, you can answer the same questions in our online survey.
This engagement exercise will close on 17 September 2020
The feedback we have received so far is already making a difference by helping to inform the local plans we are developing, to work together, to build a stronger future. What you tell us here will be used to help shape our Stronger Futures plan, which will be published this autumn.
Further opportunities to have your say include a consultation on our budget plans, which will start in October 2020, to ensure we have the money to deliver our plans for a stronger future and tackle our financial challenge.

What do you think is most important to focus on, to build a stronger future for everyone in the borough?

A copy of the engagement findings report and our Stronger Futures Plan is available under Engagement Findings and Feedback. Please share your ideas about what you think is important to focus on, to support you and your community, to come out of the pandemic even stronger than before.
For example:
- Have some challenges brought about by the pandemic affected you and your community more than others?
- Have there been any positive changes arising out of the pandemic for you and your community?
- People are talking about a new normal - what do you want the new normal to be for you and your community?

Lots more people on street, lots more people exercising, I walked through Chester and seen people drinking on the street in the park and ampertherate, it looks like the goverment have taken our pubs away, so people are finding other way to socialise, but they are leaving rubbish behind. It's great people are meeting up and able to have picnics or drink, but leaving rubbish is wrong, better fines and more street cleaning, encourage more people to use these spaces to enjoy themselves, social space.

CV19 has reversed the telescope and we need to focus on what can happen at a community level first. Invest the telescope
1Alex Bellover 3 years agoEnsure the Hoole tennis courts and other facilities across the local authority are fit for use year round.
These tennis courts have seen a large increase in use as they usually do during the summer months but remain in a state of disrepair. Whilst I understand the council will be short of money after the Covid-19 pandemic, I believe regeneration of the tennis courts, which could allow them to be used on a more year-round basis by locals, would be hugely beneficial to those who live in Hoole. I'm sure there are other sports facilities in poor condition in the city and believe if we are to lower obesity and increase life expectancy in all areas, regenerating these sports facilities would be a brilliant place to start. Moreover, there is opportunity for local schools to utilise these facilities. In Hoole, primary schools such as Hoole Primary and St Martins Academy could use the tennis courts during the school day which not only provides an opportunity for funding, through school fairs and fundraising, but could also support promotion of healthy lifestyles for young people in Chester.

Cllr Mandy Clareover 3 years agoEstablish a new Working Group to map out realistic local living costs and examine what constitutes quality and sustainable employment.
This group could sit within the Poverty Truth Advisory Board, assess what the support/resource needs may be in identifying opportunities within the private sector but also with regards to Council contract renewal in re-shaping the local economy alongside dedicated Eco-Community Co-Op Hubs. Community-ownership, particularly forms based on flatter pay structures such as http://belfastcleaningsociety.com, can play their part in providing a meaningful route out of the crisis of low income and are an extremely positive, empowering means of galvanising local people within low income communities around shared projects that address local need. They have potential to re-build participation, confidence and viable incomes in more environmentally sustainable ways.
3Sevalmost 4 years agoClimate change measures as a priority
In the link related to the question what is most important to build a stronger future, there are many ideas linked to climate and protecting the environment. Supporting local businesses, local food, invest on low energy public transport, review insulation standards for buildings to reduce energy, invest in rain water collection , invest in technologies that will allow safe use of grey water, enforce a motor off policy on car parks, all would help in reducing carbon emissions. Then it would be great to identify the future jobs needed to support these actions and review the education needs to achieve this.
1Cllr Mandy Clareover 3 years agoProvide dedicated spaces in low income communities to bolster against the economic and health crises
These could be low-cost eco-builds that provide a base for communities to increase their knowledge and confidence in tackling the issues that directly affect them, inviting in expertise to help explore and implement solutions to the crisis that best meet the new and evolving needs of the community in relation to low income, climate, health, hunger, education, democratic voice, tackling anti-social behaviour and community safety etc. They could be managed by communities and be a home for resident-led, council and partner-supported community wealth-building, rather than part of an ‘outreach’ service.

Allow grass verges to grow and invest in wild flower seeds rather than mowing them down. This will encourage insect and birds to thrive. Rotherham Council have planted 8 miles of wild flower verges saving £25K in mowing costs!
4Jamesalmost 4 years agoPromote 'Local'
The Covid message in Wales is not 'stay alert' but 'stay local'. The more that people are remaining at home (and many of us will be forced to now simply due to child care) the more we are able to support the genuinely local economy - the corner shop, greengrocer, butcher, newsagent, cafe, pub etc - but also the local town centre. I've had to cancel my summer holiday, many others will have to. We have kids to entertain. Could we promote at-home-holidays, ultra local day trips you can make by bike/walking if you can, or car if you have to. could we promote street parties as a way for neighbours to thank each other, and to meet up after weeks of whats app? Wrexham do an annual play day when they convert the town centre into a family focused space. Could we copy it in Ellesmere Port, Winsford, Frodsham, Chester and wherever? Cahllenge local communities to out do each other

Gordonalmost 4 years agoMore supported volunteering
The Council needs to invest more in volunteer organisers, for example Green Space Rangers so that more volunteer hours can be effectively managed. This will have the added benefit of reducing demand on health and social care are members of the community will also have improved health and wellbeing
1Jamesalmost 4 years agoJust do something
One of the better aspects of the pandemic has been people looking out for neighbours and offering help. Sometimes we can all be too backwards at asking for, or offering help from friends and neighbours. So many things that sounds small add up to bigger things. We can't all do eveything, but we should all try to: support local shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, vote, give blood, recycle, home compost, walk or cycle short journeys, pick up some roadside litter ocasionally, talk to people, join a local group or society and so on.
