Cycling

Cheshire West and Chester is perfect for cycling, not too flat, not too hilly, and some very picturesque countryside along the way.

Within the area we have a number of routes that are part of the National Cycle Network and numerous other localised routes, many of which are circular.

Latest News:

Closure of the Greenway between the canal access near Blacon, up to the Northgate Ponds access.

The closure will commence on the 1 March 2010 for ten weeks. Access to the canal and Northgate Ponds will still be open. The closure is due to construction of a new ramped link between the canal, the Greenway and Deva Link road.

Closure of Canal towpath from Cow Lane Bridge to Morgans Mount.

The closure will take place between Monday 16 November and March 2010 for safety reasons during the important maintenance work being carried out to the City Walls between Rufus Court and Abbey Road. Please use the links below for further information about this closure.

CYCLEChester
Chester receives £2.4 million pound of funding for cycling initiatives, Cheshire County Council and Chester City Council made a joint bid for money from the Cycling Demonstration Towns project. Competition for funding, and the status, was intense with half the highway authorities in England submitting bids and detailed plans. On June 19 2008 it was announced that Chester along with 11 other locations had been successful. For further information please view the CYCLEChester website.

Cycling for Health
Experts recommend being active for 30 minutes a day, five times a week. Cycling improves strength, stamina and aerobic fitness, with little risk of over-exertion. It does not pose such a risk to joints as some other forms of exercise such as jogging. Cycling just 20 miles a week can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 50%, and cycling at 10 miles an hour will burn off 400 calories every hour. So what are you waiting for.
