The Road Safety Unit aims to
minimise road crashes and casualties, improve access to the
highway for all, especially vulnerable road users, and address road
safety issues that affect quality of life in our communities.
We will achieve these aims through a combination of
Engineering, Education, Training and Publicity, working in
partnership with others where we can. In this way we will
contribute to wider service and corporate objectives that are
consistent with these aims.

Pilot scheme aims
to reduce risky behaviour - Young drivers between the ages of 17
and 21 across Cheshire West and Chester are being asked to take
part in a new pilot road safety scheme which involves a small high

Red Routes
'Red Routes' are routes across
Cheshire which potentially carry the highest risk to road users of
suffering a serious or fatal crash. These Red Routes are easily
identified with their unique red road signs, advising motorists of
the number of crashes and people injured along these routes in
three years.

A high profile campaign is currently taking place on
the two highest risk routes, these are:
A530 Middlewich Road, between Middlewich and
Nantwich.
A540 Chester High Road, between Cheshire/Wirral
boundary and Two Mills (A550)
Use the links above to find out
more information about each of the routes, including how
you can help reduce your risk and make your local Red Route
safer.
Road Safety
Engineering
We investigate the occurrence and distribution of accidents on
Cheshire's roads and devise engineering measures to reduce the risk
of future accidents. The limited financial resources available are
concentrated on sites or areas where personal injury accidents
occur. Road Safety Audits are done at various stages in the
development of highway schemes to ensure that they operate as
safely as practicable. For further details please contact Road

Personal Injury Collision Data
The Road Safety Unit is responsible for managing the Council's
personal injury collision database for incidents that occur on the
highway. This information is provided to us by Cheshire
Constabulary, who are legally responsible for recording all
relevant information to national standard. The Road Safety Unit
uses the data to identify current road safety issues and problems,
which in turn guides the annual road safety investment and work
programmes.
To request collision data for a particular location in Cheshire,
please download the application
form (PDF) and return it to the address provided on the form
with the appropriate payment. If you have any queries, please
contact Road Safety on 01244 972166.
