Grosvenor Museum

At the Grosvenor Museum you can discover the history of the fascinating city of Chester and the people who have made it so special. It houses an impressive collection of Roman Tombstones, along with fascinating displays that build a picture of Roman Chester. Admire the dazzling craftsmanship of the nationally important collection of silver and enjoy the beauties of half a millennium of art. Discover and explore Chester's impressive geology and natural history. Make sure you discover 20 Castle Street, a town house that takes you back to home life from the 17th century to the 1920s including Mary in her Victorian kitchen, a Georgian drawing room, a nursery and a fully fitted Edwardian bathroom.

Access Issues

The Grosvenor Museum has a full independent access to the ground floor, including Exhibition Gallery One, Lecture Theatre, the ground floor of the Period House, the Roman Gallery and the Roman Stones Gallery and accessible toilet. The Art Gallery, Silver Gallery, Natural History Gallery and Exhibition Gallery Two are on the first floor, the Education Workroom is on the second floor. There is no lift.

Refreshments

There are many cafes, restaurants and pubs nearby. There are hot and cold drinks available in the King's Arms Kitchen and you are welcome to eat your packed lunch in this area. Please note the King's Arm Kitchen is situated on the first floor and there is no disabled access. It is used by schools over lunch periods during term time.

Shop

The shop stocks a range of books and gifts for all ages, along with greetings cards, stamps and disposable cameras.

How to Get Here

  • 10 minutes walk from Chester Town Hall.
  • 25 minutes walk from Chester Railway Station. There is a free shuttle bus into the city centre on production on a valid train ticket.
  • From the inner ring road turn into Grosvenor Street and the museum is located on the right hand side. The nearest public car park is The Little Roodee Coach and Car Park on Castle Drive and is a 5 minute walk away from the museum.
  • There is a parking bay for disabled visitors outside the museum building.
