Reduce your food waste and save money

Roadshows show how to save around £50 per month

8 February 2010

Cheshire West and Chester Council is kicking off its Love Food, Hate Waste campaign in style with the first in a series of interactive roadshows. The event is taking place in Chester Town Square on Tuesday, 9 February 2010

Fronted by celebrity chef Richard Fox, who starred in Risky Business with Neil Morissey, the campaign launch will give residents the opportunity to watch cooking demonstrations showing how food that we all have in our cupboards, can be combined with leftovers to make cheap, healthy and tasty meals for the family.

Councillor Neil Ritchie, Environment Executive Member said: "So many of us don’t realise just how much food we throw away on a weekly basis - 8.3 million tonnes of food are binned by households in the UK every year, most of which could have been eaten.  The campaign is not about asking people to eat less just to make the most of the food they buy."

Each month the average family throws away over £50 of perfectly good food. To help families reduce this figure the launch event will give people the opportunity to take part in fun activities including the perfect portions and play your waste right, games both designed to help reduce the amount of food we waste. Those who take part will also received helpful giveaways including recipe books, magnetic shopping lists and spaghetti measures.

Visitors to the roadshows will also have the opportunity to win family tickets to Chester’s Food, Drink and Lifestyle Festival simply by sharing their top tips for reducing food waste, or by saying what they would do with the £50 they would save each month.

Following the launch event, the Love Food Hate Waste road show is set to tour the rest of the Borough during February and March with five more cooking demonstrations and 29 interactive roadshows taking place.

Councillor Ritchie added: "The roadshows are designed to show people just how easy it is to cut food wastage.  There are fun hands-on activities and competitions for all the family. If you miss the launch event in Chester, a trip to one of the other roadshows is a must."
