Household waste recycling centres

Coronavirus (COVID-19) information

Some household waste recycling centres are now open for essential use only.

Residents should only visit a recycling centre if the journey is absolutely necessary. This means that if items stored at home cause a health and safety risk such as injury, illness or harm to the household then the trip is essential. Otherwise, please store your waste safely at home until normal services resume.

You can now take your household waste to the recycling centre in a van, pickup or trailer. Usual trailer restrictions apply. Commercial vehicles will be refused as trade waste is not accepted on the site. The trade waste recycling centre will be re-opening on 8 June 2020.

Important COVID-19 household waste recycling centre rules

  • Respect the strict two-metre distancing rule around staff and other site users.
  • Only visit the recycling centre if it is absolutely necessary i.e. if bulky items stored at home represent a health and safety risk.

Your questions answered

Following updated Government guidance we have put in practical arrangements and can now open our sites in Chester, Ellesmere Port, Winsford, Northwich and Neston, with Frodsham opening three days later. These sites are open for essential journeys only. The Tattenhall site will remain closed until further notice due to local roads not being able to cope with large volumes of standing traffic.

The Council is following Government and industry guidance and has worked with our contractors, HW Martins, to agree the best approach based on local conditions within agreed safety guidelines. Your safety, along with protecting our staff, is our first priority and all site users are expected to follow the rules published above.

Originally the Tattenhall site remained closed due to its size and location on the highway, which could have caused increased queues on nearby roads, but measures are now in place to allow the site to operate safely with new social distancing measures and traffic management.

Visits which are essential to prevent injury, illness or harm to residents who have a problem with storing too much waste at home.

We appreciate that it is unsightly to keep waste that's not collected at the kerbside at home, but the Covid-19 pandemic is unprecedented and we must all work together to concentrate on beating the virus. The Government advice remains that the public should only leave their homes for essential reasons. This is to ensure that the risk of spreading the infection is limited as much as possible, therefore our sites are only open for essential visits, which are defined above. We are keeping up to date with Government guidance and will open the sites for residents as soon as it is safe to do so.

Each site will only allow so many people access at any one time in accordance with social distancing requirements. This will lower the number of visitors allowed each day but will keep our residents safe.

This is to follow the Government guidelines of social distancing, and to ensure that users and employees keep a safe distance of two metres where possible.

Staff will be at the entrance to the site to check what you are disposing of and advise you of the site rules and when you are able to enter. Please pay attention to container signs and only put your waste in the correct container. Please do not use containers that have a barrier or signage saying ‘not in use’. Please remember to wear gloves where possible and wash your hands or use hand sanitiser when you leave the site.

The two metre social distancing rules will be strictly enforced and operatives cannot assist the public at this time. You can bring someone from your household to help you put your waste in the appropriate skip. Do not bring any waste to site that you cannot safely unload and place in the appropriate skip. Alternatively, you can organise a bulky waste collection from your home.

Remember that visits to the site are only for items that stored at home can cause a health and safety risk such as injury, illness or harm to the household then the trip is essential.

Chester, Ellesmere Port, Winsford, Northwich and Neston sites are open from Tuesday 12 May 2020. The Tattenhall site will remain closed until further notice. The Frodsham site will be open from Friday 15 May 2020. Remember that visits to the site are only for items that if stored at home can cause a health and safety risk such as injury, illness or harm to the household then the trip is essential.

The site is operating under a one-in-one-out system. Therefore, it is expected that there will be significant delays. If you must visit, please be patient; we appreciate the wait could be frustrating but be assured that staff are working hard in difficult conditions to get you through as quickly and as safely as they can.

We are anticipating significant delays to enter the site as we have to limit the number of users disposing of their recycling and waste at all times. This is to ensure that we are following the Government guidelines on social distancing, and to ensure that users and employees keep a safe distance of two metres where possible. We are asking residents to think carefully about whether their site visit is essential, and to store waste at home where possible. This will help to reduce traffic to the sites.

We are asking all residents to bear with us while we monitor and review this service, taking into consideration any new regulations and to continue to work to minimise the spread of the virus. The health and wellbeing of our residents and staff will remain at the forefront of our decisions.

Chester, Ellesmere Port, Winsford, Northwich and Neston recycling centres will return to their normal opening days and hours from Wednesday 27 May 2020. Frodsham will return to normal from Saturday 30 May 2020. Tattenhall will remain closed until overall demand has decreased for the other recycling centres and we are able to safely open the site.

Only Neston site operate a 'permit access' only service. Please make sure that if you are visiting Neston your permit is displayed in your car window.
