Big Dee Day clean up

River DeeThis year’s event will be launched on Friday 13 September, with activities taking place over the following week until 21 September. Teams of volunteers will be working together with the Council’s Greenspace team to cover the coastline and tributaries from Talacre to Chester and Neston, and as far away as Llangollen and north Shropshire.

It's important that the marine environment of the River Dee remains healthy, and it’s vital that everyone understands the threat the local river faces from waste material, particularly plastic.

According to Greenpeace, it’s estimated more than 12 million tons of plastic from bottles and bags to microbeads end up in oceans every year.

The River Dee, its estuary, river banks and marshes have the potential to capture a significant amount of plastic. The Big Dee Clean-up Week is just one of the ways to help reduce pollution and protect the marine environment so that it remains a healthy river ecosystem for many local plants and wildlife.

Many residents have already been involved in similar volunteering projects throughout the year to help improve their local area as part of the Love Your Streets campaign, which aims to make the borough’s neighbourhoods the cleanest, safest and greenest in the country.

If you’re interested in volunteering, as either an individual or community group, to improve your local area, the Council’s Area Streets Information and Solutions team (ASIST) officers can help provide the tools needed to do the job. Tools can be borrowed throughout the year for things such as litter picking or tidying up vegetation.
