A well-connected and accessible borough

CarsThriving economy outcome: A well-connected and accessible borough

Winter maintenance

The 2017-18 winter was longer and more severe than usual. Our Highways gritting teams went out 102 times to keep the borough's road network safe and flowing smoothly. Damaging effects of snow, ice and rain caused an unprecedented number of potholes to form and we have allocated additional resources to fix them.

Wrexham Road

A £1.2 million scheme to improve Wrexham Road (A483) and the traffic flow into Chester was completed in 2017 and funded by the National Productivity Investment Fund from the Department for Transport. It added an extra lane to the existing dual carriageway and improved flow on the A55 by allowing traffic to leave the Posthouse roundabout more quickly.

Watergate Bridge

The historic Watergate Bridge in Chester was re-opened after a £590,000 restoration. Most of the stone had to be replaced due to delamination, where water flakes away outer layers of stonework.

Speed limit reductions

We are in the middle of a four-year programme to increase the number of 20MPH speed limits on residential roads and outside schools. We brought in limits in 33 locations in 2017-18. Over 50 per cent of our goal of 128 locations is now complete. In the fourth year we will assess 68 more locations for suitability.

Parking strategy

We continue to progress our 15-year Parking strategy. The strategy will ensure we better manage demand and contribute to the borough's economy. A number of action plans have been published, tailored to the parking needs of different communities. During 2017-18, plans for Chester, Ellesmere Port and Frodsham/Helsby were unveiled, including meeting demand and parking charges that are easier to understand.

Looking forward

We hope to begin improving the A51 (Tarvin to Chester) shortly. It will relieve congestion and improve traffic flow. Pedestrian and cycle facilities will also be improved. Conditional funding allocation for this work has been approved by the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership's Local Growth Fund.
