Guidance for renewing Hackney Carriage and private hire drivers licence
It is your responsibility to apply to renew your licence before it expires. You will need to meet the following requirements. This may take several weeks to complete and you should ensure you complete these before applying.
Disclosure and Barring Service
All drivers must submit to a criminality check and provide an ‘Enhanced Disclosure’ along with their application to renew every three years.

DVSA practical assessment or equivalent
All existing drivers must have passed the ‘Standard Driving Assessment’ portion of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) taxi driving test before April 2019.
You can apply to take the test through the DVSA or with an approved ‘diamond’ qualified assessor. We have three approved providers of the taxi and private hire practical driving assessment:
If you have previously completed this assessment and presented your certificate to us you are not required to retake the test.
Medical assessment
A medical examination must be performed every six years once you reach the age of 45. After you turn 65, you must undergo a medical examination every year. Drivers under the age of 45 are not required to have a medical assessment performed.
The examination must be performed by your own GP or by another doctor at the same practice.
