Visit of HRH The Princess Royal and HMS Albion

Chester once again welcomes the crowds today HRH The Princess Royal inspects the ship’s company of HMS Albion in the city’s town hall square.

  • The company of HMS Albion exercise their Freedom of the City of Chester by marching through the streets.
  • Their sponsor HRH The Princess Royal will take the salute before inspecting the company outside the Town Hall.
  • A plaque to celebrate the Town Hall’s 150th birthday will then be unveiled by the Princess Royal with the Lord Mayor of Chester before she attends a special celebration event at Chester Cathedral, hosted by the Commanding Officer of HMS Albion.

Travel

A number of roads in the city centre will be closed for this event. The best way to travel into the city is to use public transport or the Park and Ride service

Closed from 9.30am until 4.30pm

  • Northgate Street – From Hunter Street to Eastgate Street
  • St Werburgh Street – From Northgate Street to Eastgate Street
  • Eastgate Street – From Foregate Street to Northgate Street
  • Foregate Street – From Eastgate Street to St John Street
  • St John Street – From Foregate Street to Little St John Street
  • Bridge Street – From a point 13m North of Feathers Lane to Watergate Street
  • Watergate Street – From Bridge Street to Nicholas Street

Additionally, some roads will be closed for shorter periods

Closed from 9.30am until 1pm

  • Northgate Street – From George Street to Hunter Street

Closed from 11am until 11.30am

  • Castle Street – From Lower Bridge Street to Grosvenor Roundabout
  • Lower Bridge Street – From Duke Street to Pepper Street
  • Bridge Street – From Pepper Street to a point 13m North of Feathers Lane

Pedestrian access to premises situated on or adjacent to the roads will be maintained at all times.

Parking restrictions (28 - 29 September)

Parking (including Blue Badge parking) loading and unloading will be suspended:

From 4pm on 28 September until 12 noon on 29 September

  • Castle Street – From Grosvenor Roundabout to St Mary’s Hill

From 5pm on 28 September till 12 noon on 29 September

  • Parking bays on Lower Bridge Street – From Pepper Street to Castle Street

From 5am until 4.30pm on 29 September

  • Northgate Street – From Hunter Street to St Werburgh Street
  • St Werburgh Street – From Northgate Street to Eastgate Street
  • Eastgate Street – St Werburgh Street to Foregate Street
  • Foregate Street – From Eastgate Street to St John Street
  • Bridge Street – From a point 13m North of Feathers Lane to Watergate Street

From 5am until 1pm on Sunday 29 September

  • Northgate Street – From George Street to Hunter Street

From 5am until 12 noon on Sunday 29 September

  • Castle Street – From Lower Bridge Street to St Mary’s Hill
  • Lower Bridge Street – From Pepper Street to Duke Street
