Average read time: 1 minute

The A556 has been closed between the A559 Manchester Road and A530 King Street roundabout. The emergency road closure was caused due to a drain collapse.

A signed diversion route is in place using A559 Manchester Road, A533 Kingsmead and A556 Shurlach Road.

Cheshire West and Chester Council has confirmed that contractors are now working day and night shifts and expect to re-open the road on Tuesday 19 September.

Work has continued off site this week, a trench box has been assembled to ensure the drain reinstatement is carried out as safely as possible. This is due to the deep excavation needed, protecting workers from a potential trench collapse.

Excavations are required in the central reservation to gain access to repair the drainage collapse, with the eastbound lane being closed (Manchester bound).

Councillor Karen Shore, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Transport said:

This closure is causing significant disruption for residents, businesses, and commuters. This has proved to be a complex repair requiring work offsite. I’m pleased to say our contractors are working day and night shifts now that they can work on site.

Whilst the closure has been in place, we have arranged several maintenance activities. These have included gully cleansing, barrier repairs, carriageway repairs, re-lining of the road markings, replacement of a lighting column and illuminated sign.
