About Trees for Climate
The Trees for Climate programme launched in December 2020, with the announcement of £12.1million of funding for the first year of a five-year programme, through the Government's Nature for Climate Fund. A further £20.4 million of funding for year two was announced in March 2021.
The Mersey Forest, which covers Cheshire and Merseyside, is currently one of twelve Community Forests across England delivering an ambitious target of planting over 900 hectares of woodland by March 2025 through the Trees for Climate programme. Cheshire West and Chester Council is the accountable body for the programme, with support from Community Forest Trust.
In the first year of the programme, Trees for Climate has seen trees planted in Community Forests right across the country. When mature, these will eventually store over 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of over 45,000 trans-Atlantic flights, playing an important role in the meeting the Government’s net zero emissions by 2050 target.
As well as helping the UK's efforts to reach net zero, Trees for Climate will also reduce flood risk, increase sustainable UK grown timber, provide more places for nature and biodiversity to thrive, and increase people's access to and enjoyment of woodland.
