Cheshire West and Chester Council launches new Short Breaks Strategy to support families and young people with SEND
Cheshire West and Chester Council has launched its Short Breaks Commissioning Strategy for 2026–2030, setting out a clear vision to improve support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families.
Short breaks provide vital opportunities for children and young people with SEND to take part in fun activities that develop independence and build confidence. At the same time, they offer families essential time to rest and recharge.
The new strategy outlines the Council’s commitment to ensuring that families can access high-quality, flexible and inclusive short breaks. It responds to growing demand and recognises the need for services to be more consistent, accessible and responsive to individual needs.
The strategy has been developed based on the views of children, young people and their families with lived experience. Children, young people, parents and carers have played a central role in shaping its priorities, highlighting the need for improved communication, greater choice and simpler access to support.
The Council will work in partnership with organisations across education, health, social care, and the voluntary sector to deliver the strategy’s ambitions. Together, these partners will help create a more joined-up system that supports children and young people to reach their full potential.
The strategy represents a significant step forward in building a fairer and more inclusive offer for families across Cheshire West and Chester.
