Cheshire West and Chester Council is asking Northwich residents and visitors to shape the plans to transform Northwich Market and open a new modern market in the Barons Quay Shopping Centre.

This will replace the existing market within Weaver Square, a short distance away, which will be demolished and replaced with new quality homes as part of an ambitious plan to regenerate the town centre.

The new market will provide a significantly improved experience for customers and traders alike with a wider choice of stalls and facilities. The proposed unit is currently vacant and occupies a key corner position within Barons Quay which will provide an ideal location for the new market.

This will be the biggest investment in Northwich Market since 1960s. The new market will benefit from an investment of around £1.8 million to enable a town centre market to remain open, and create a market ready for the future where current and future traders can thrive.

There will be an online questionnaire and two drop-in events in the proposed new market location at Barons Quay in units 12 and 13 opposite H&M, to provide an opportunity to look at the plans in more detail. This will be open on 22 May between 12 and 7pm and on 23 May between 12 and 5pm.

The online survey will be open from 6 May until 9 June at:

The Council is also keen to hear from any potential businesses looking to trade in the new market which is currently expected to open in 2026 and anticipates that the existing market in Weaver Square will remain open until just before the new market opens.

Starting quotation marks
At a time when other councils are withdrawing or closing markets due to funding pressures, Cheshire West and Chester Council remains committed to them and to Northwich. We’re asking residents and businesses to play their part in shaping our plans for Northwich Market, which we’re co-producing with new and existing market traders to ensure the market thrives in its new home.

Evidence from the UK and around the world makes clear that markets with al fresco spaces, food and beverage stalls and traditional indoor stalls bring people back into town centres. It’s why vibrant town and city centres feature new markets and new homes - and why Northwich Market and the Weaver Square residential project will be so important to the ongoing regeneration of Northwich town centre.
