Council tax scam email warning

The Council is warning residents about the latest scam doing the rounds which is targeting people over Council Tax payments.

Cheshire West and Chester Council has been made aware that fraudsters are targeting residents by emailing them and asking for their Council Tax payment details.

The emails state that the recipient has an outstanding Council Tax payment on their account and prompts them to click on a link to ‘confirm their payment status’. An on-line form then asks for bank details.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Director of Environment and Communities, Maria Byrne, said: “If you receive one, please DO NOT click on any link or attachments in these scam emails. They are not sent by our Council Tax team and should be deleted.

“A resident has been in touch about an email claiming to be from the Council, and this is a known national scam, in which the email states there is an outstanding payment due on their Council Tax account and asking them to click on a link to check their payments.

“Emails from us will always be sent from either ‘@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk’ or ‘donotreply@rabs.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk’, and text messages will never come from unknown mobile numbers.

“Any links we include in our Council Tax emails and text messages will always direct you to our Council Tax webpage.”
