The Council will join in a wave for light to show support for the reopening of Spellow Library in Liverpool, which was set alight during this summer’s riots.

Storyhouse which hosts Chester Library will be lit up and where possible other libraries in the borough will leave a light on for the evening of Wednesday 11 December.

Following months of hard work and overwhelming community support, Spellow Library has been returned to its former glory and will reopen its doors to the public on Thursday 12 December 2024.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for a Fairer Future, Councillor Lisa Denson said:

The mindless destruction of Liverpool’s Spellow Library hit the headlines. It was a symbol of community safety and cohesion, a free haven where everyone was welcome, when it was set alight, a vital neighbourhood asset was temporarily lost. I’m delighted we are able to show our support by joining the wave of light across the country, as together we spotlight the essential role our libraries play in the cultural fabric of our communities.
