Nuns Road paving scheme to be completed on schedule
Improvement works to the paving along Nuns Road in Chester are on track to be completed ahead of the Easter break.
The scheme, which began on 19 January, focuses on repairing the existing footway alongside the City Walls. Over recent years, several sections had become uneven or lifted by tree roots, creating a number of potential trip hazards.
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Highways Service has carefully lifted and re-laid the original paving, reusing as much material as possible to preserve the site’s historic character. The edges of the tree pits have been reset with a double row of granite, and the surrounding surface has been infilled with a specialist resin that flexes naturally as the tree roots grow—preventing future damage.
As the paving forms part of the City Walls, the area is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The works therefore required approval from both Historic England and the Council’s Conservation Team.
To support the application, a series of conditions had to be met, including a detailed laser scan of this section of the Walls to record and safeguard its current condition.
