Primary school pupils from across the borough have been celebrated after taking part in Cheshire West and Chester Council’s competition to name its new fleet of street sweepers.

Contest invited local schools to submit naming ideas for the vehicles

Sparking imaginative suggestions ranging from witty puns to creative characters.

The entries were so impressive that the Council chose more names than originally planned, the additional names will be used on other vehicles within the StreetCare fleet.

Representatives from schools across the borough were welcomed to a special celebration event at the Civic Hall in Ellesmere Port. Each attendee received a personalised certificate, before getting the chance to see some of the sweepers up close and meet members of the Council’s StreetCare team.

Each school also received goodie bags including litter picking kits, recycling items, a jigsaw puzzle and a cap, sponsored by the FCC Community Action Fund, vehicle manufacturer, Aebi Schmidt UK and Cheshire West Recycling.

Colleagues from Cheshire West Recycling and the Council’s Public Protection team also attended, giving talks on recycling, litter and dog fouling.

The naming competition aimed to encourage pupils to take pride in their local environment and learn more about the Council’s work to keep the borough clean, linking closely with the Council’s Borough Plan mission around Neighbourhood Pride.

Cllr Stuart Bingham, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Pride, said:

The imagination shown by pupils across the borough has been absolutely fantastic. Our StreetCare teams work hard every day to keep our communities clean and welcoming, and it’s wonderful to see young people taking such an interest in that work.

The names they chose bring real personality to our sweepers, and we’re delighted to celebrate every school that took part.

The newly named sweepers will now be out and about across the borough, proudly displaying the names chosen by local pupils.
