Litter and bins

Street litter bins are for small waste items like paper, cans, bottles, and bagged dog waste. They should not be used for disposing of household waste.

We empty over 3,000 street bins across the borough.

How often we empty each bin depends on the location and footfall in the area:

  • city centre: daily
  • town centres and high footfall areas: daily, Monday to Friday, with a reduced service on weekends
  • urban residential areas: up to three times a week, depending on footfall
  • rural areas: weekly
  • play areas: twice a week

Most of our bins feature a QR code which enables you to use your smart phone to find out the next collection date. This also enables you to report an issue including full or damaged bins.

Solar Powered Bins

In some areas we use solar compactor bins to help increase the capacity of the bin and reduce the number of times we need to attend to empty it. Some examples of where we use these bins are Chester City Centre, Frodsham, Ellesmere Port Town Centre, and Malpas High Street.

How you can help

Wherever possible, we encourage our residents to take their litter home with them, particularly when the waste is bulky and likely to fill up the bin.

If you have litter and the nearest bin happens to be full, please do not stack it on top or by the bin. Please take it to another bin with space or take it home with you.

We value and appreciate the support from our communities to litter pick. If you would like to join or arrange a community litter pick, please contact our 'Your Streets' Team.

If we are not due to empty the litter bin and you need to report it as full or damaged, please let us know.
