Preparation for Adulthood
Preparing for adulthood is about helping young people build the skills, confidence and support they need to live fulfilling, independent, and healthy lives.
Preparation for Adulthood focuses on supporting young people as they move from childhood into adult life. This includes planning for education, employment, independent living, good health, and positive relationships, so young people can achieve the best possible outcomes for their future.
What is Preparation for Adulthood
Preparation for Adulthood is a long‑term approach that starts early and develops over time. It is not a single service or one moment of transition. Instead, it brings together education, health, social care, families, and wider partners to support young people to:
- Make informed choices about their future
- Develop independence and life skills
- Build aspirations and confidence
- Access the right support at the right time
Preparation for Adulthood is particularly important during key transitions, such as moving from school to further education, training, employment, or adult services.
Who is Preparation for Adulthood for
Preparation for Adulthood can start from Year 9 but we aim to begin as early as possible and will continue into early adulthood. It is especially relevant for:
- Young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
- Young people who may need additional support to make successful transitions
- Families and carers supporting young people into adulthood
- Professionals working with young people across education, health and care settings
The Four Key Outcomes of Preparation for Adulthood
Preparation for Adulthood is built around four nationally recognised outcome areas:
- Employment, Education and Training - Supporting young people to develop skills, qualifications and experiences that help them move towards employment, further education or training
- Independent Living - Helping young people gain skills to live as independently as possible, including housing options, travel, money management and daily living skills
- Good Health - Supporting physical and emotional wellbeing, positive mental health, and access to suitable health services as young people transition to adulthood
- Friends, Relationships and Community - Enabling young people to build friendships, maintain relationships, and participate fully in their communities
Our Preparation for Adulthood Strategy
Our Preparation for Adulthood Strategy sets out our shared vision and priorities for supporting young people as they transition into adult life.
The strategy explains:
- our commitment to early and proactive planning
- how services will work together to support young people
- how young people and families are involved in decision making
- how we will improve outcomes and reduce inequalities
The strategy provides a clear framework for professionals, families and young people, ensuring a consistent, joined‑up approach across services.
How we work with young people and families
Preparation for Adulthood is most effective when young people are at the centre of planning. We are committed to:
- listening to young people’s views, goals and aspirations
- working in partnership with families and carers
- coordinating support across services
- providing clear information so young people and families know what support is available.
