Flooding

Flooding within the borough is often responded to by different multi-agency teams. This includes some of our teams, the Environment Agency, United Utilities, Welsh Water and the Emergency Services.

If you live in an area identified at risk of surface water or river flooding you are at risk of flooding, regardless of whether you have never flooded before or have flooded recently. The Government advice is for all property owners in flood risk areas to install flood resilience products in advance of flooding, create a flood plan and sign up to receive flood alerts.

Intense extreme rainfall events are becoming more frequent across Cheshire West and flooding is occurring to properties and business located within areas of surface water and fluvial flood risk.

Advice and support

Guidance on how to prepare for flooding and how to get help during and after a flood event can be found on the Gov.UK website as well as the Flood Hub website. You can also use the guidance document created by the Environment Agency (EA).

Further information around how to prepare for an emergency can be found on the Cheshire Resilience Forum.

Funding

We currently do not have specific funding mechanisms to support those affected residents and businesses who have no property insurance or have flood damage excluded from their insurance policy. However, we do offer support through our Help in Emergencies for Local People (HELP) discretionary scheme that offers welfare assistance to those people who are on low income or require support in an emergency.

Emergency action

If there is a risk to life and you require evacuation, please dial 999. For other flooding emergencies, you should call us on 0300 123 7036 to report any issues that present an immediate danger or could impact on a residential property or business.

In the event of serious flooding, we work closely with the emergency services. We help where we can, in particular where people are vulnerable. We have a network of local people and organisations we can call on to help when there's a flood.

Sandbags

Residents and businesses at risk of flooding are advised to take proactive steps to protect their property. This could include installing your own flood protection measures or retaining a stock of sand/sandbags.

In emergencies, we are able to provide a limited number of sandbags to properties in immediate danger. During severe weather the demand for this will be high and we highly recommend that residents make their own arrangements in advance if possible. Sandbags and sand can be purchased from most good builders’ merchants and large DIY stores.

Please note: any sandbags issued will not be collected by us afterwards. If they have come into contact with flood water they may be contaminated by sewage.

To request sandbags please call 0300 123 7026 – option 2.
