Skip licences

Do I need a licence?

If you need to put skip on a footpath, road or verge we maintain, you'll need a licence. It's the responsibility of the company providing the skip to apply for and obtain a licence, not the householder or customer.

You don’t need a licence if you are placing the skip entirely on a driveway or unadopted road. You can check if a road is adopted by using our online gazetter.

Conditions

To ensure the safety of the public and users we set the following conditions when issuing a licence:

  • location – this should not be placed on or within 10 metres of a road junction, near a pedestrian crossing or on a busy road. In addition the skip should be placed so that road visibility is not impaired such as on a bend
  • the size and shape of skip – maximum length, width and height of 10 metres
  • signing, lighting and barriers – all skips located on the highway should be signed and illuminated so they are clearly visible and safe. In busy areas they might need to be within barriers. If the skip hire company doesn’t use the required safety lights and markings, you could be fined up to £1,000
  • you need to display the name and telephone number of the skip hire company at all times
  • you will also be required to provide evidence of Public Liability Insurance to cover up to £5,000,000. Public Liability Insurance covers third party claims against your business for injury or damage.
  • a maximum duration may be set dependant on the location

How do I apply?

You should only be completing this form if you represent the company providing the skip. Applications from householders or customers will not be accepted.

You will need the following before you can submit your application:

  • insurance details
  • the location where you are planning to place the skip
  • your original licence reference details (if you are requesting an extension)
Apply

How much does it cost and what happens next?

The licence costs £104.00 and lasts for up to one month. To extend your licence there is a charge of £104.00 for each additional month.

Once your application has been submitted and we have all the information required to process your application, your licence will be issued to you in around five working days. If anything is missing we will contact you. If you make a payment and your licence is refused, you will be issued with a refund within 10 working days of receiving the decision.

How to request an extension

As long as your licence hasn't expired, you can apply for an extension. You will need your original licence reference details. If your licence has already expired you will no longer be able to apply for an extension and will be required to apply for a new licence.
