Town and parish councils

Overview

Town and parish councils and smaller parish meetings are the tier of local government closest to communities and deliver a range of services at a community level.

Town and parish councils are involved in many activities ranging from providing and maintaining local facilities such as playing fields and open spaces, playgrounds, shelters, village halls, and clocks, either on their own or in partnership with other bodies as well as looking after footpaths and churchyards.

They are seen as increasingly important in representing the views and needs of local communities.

Town and parish councils are funded by an annual precept which is added to Council Tax, collected by Cheshire West and Chester Council, and paid to them.

This amount, called the precept, is added to Council Tax, collected by Cheshire West and Chester Council and paid to town and parish councils.

In the Cheshire West and Chester area there are currently 96 town and parish councils and parish meetings.
