Chester City Centre advertising
Due to the historic and picturesque nature of Chester city centre, advertising requires a measured and nuanced approach. Any advertising must consider listed building consent, the city Conservation Area and any associated design guidelines.

Wall and stair signs
In some areas of Chester City Centre, particularly the Rows, there are dedicated Business signs. Each of these signs provides directional information as well as a plaque for each business operating in the area.

Hanging signs
This type of signage includes business names and logos included on a sign situated high up on a building frontage, over hanging the pavement below. Hanging signs are especially useful for Rows level businesses to advertise to pedestrians below. The process for installing a hanging sign involves permissions from both our Highways and Planning teams. Please follow the below process:
Do you already have a sign?
- Yes -
- If you are only changing the content (not the size, materials, colour, or shape) then you do not need to inform us
- If you are making any other changes (the size, materials, colour, or shape) and the building is listed you must apply for Listed Building Consent.
- No -
- If there is an existing bracket you can apply for an Over Sail Licence:
- Email: Highways@CheshireWestandChester.gov.uk
- Fee: £250
- Requirement: Minimum 2.1m clearance from the pavement
- If there is no bracket and the building is listed you will need to apply for Listed Building Consent (LBC). You will only need to submit one LBC application for both a new bracket and new sign.
- If there is an existing bracket you can apply for an Over Sail Licence:
