It’s all go for “Green Libraries Week”

This year’s Libraries Week, the national celebration of public libraries, has an environmentally conscious theme.

This year the celebration takes place between 7 and 13 October and the theme is “Every Library Is A Green Library”.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Fairer Futures, Councillor Lisa Denson said: 

Partners include React Now (Cheshire West and Chester Council Climate Change Team) energy-saving experts from Citizen’s Advice and Groundwork, Energy Projects Plus and Severn Trent Water. There will also be a chance to have your favourite but worn clothing repaired or learn how to do it yourself with the wonderfully friendly “Pop-up Patchers” group.

Cllr Denson added: 

For example, “Weeping Bank” is a haunting evening of ghost stories which has been a sold-out smash elsewhere. Are you brave enough to experience the Weeping Bank Librarian? Recommended as not for those of a nervous disposition or those 15 years old or younger. Wine and other refreshments will be on sale.

For booklovers, there is a treat in store, with two authors visiting libraries. Jane Costello, the Sunday Times bestselling author of 15 books, five published as ‘Catherine Isaac’.

Her novels have been translated into 26 languages, selected by the Richard & Judy Book Club and she has won a Romantic Novelists’ Award twice. She was born in Liverpool, where she still lives with her husband and three sons.

Her new novel, It's Getting Hot In Here, marks a long-awaited return to romantic comedy. It’s about a 40-something TV exec and mum-of-two navigating perimenopause, a stroppy teenager, the to-do list from hell . . . and some long-forgotten stirrings about a handsome new colleague at work.

Mary Wood (who also writes as Maggie Mason) will have a one-off afternoon event at Helsby Library. Author of gripping wartime family sagas and northern sagas, Mary has an extensive collection of books many of which draw back to her childhood, which was a mixture of love and poverty.

Mary likes her readers to live the situations her characters find themselves in. As she says "parts of my books are not for the faint-hearted". So, come and find out what inspires Mary's writings and hear all about her recent publications.

Finally, for music lovers, Lara Deutsch will be collaborating with the guitarist Adam Cicchillitti on Wanderlust, a programme evoking musical portraits of 20th-century life around the world. This programme conjures images of natural landscapes, historical events, and folklore across the continents.

Through the evocative sounds of the flute and guitar, this performance immerses you in a rich tapestry of folkloric music. The voyage encompasses compositions by Canadian artists Jason Noble and John Armstrong, as well as renowned names like Bartok, Chopin, Piazzolla, Toru Takemitsu, and Gabriela Ortiz. The duo resonates with the diverse flavours of these musical traditions, creating a unique and captivating experience.
