Overcrowding

The number of people, the number and type of rooms available, and the size of the rooms are all considered when determining if a home is 'overcrowded'. The definition is complex and the age and sex of children are taken into account.

In general:

  • children under the age of one will be expected to share a bedroom with their parents
  • two children of the same sex under the age of 18 would be expected to share a bedroom
  • rooms less than 4.65m2 or 50ft2 are not considered suitable
  • bedrooms must have adequate natural light and ventilation
